About Iowans Unafraid

Mission Statement

Iowans Unafraid (IU) is a volunteer, grassroots, non-profit organization devoted to making society safer, while restoring the constitutional rights of those on the public sex offense registry (S.O.R.). Our organization is represented by family and friends who advocate for the rights of loved ones, while providing public education supported with empirical data. Our organization promotes the elimination of sexual abuse, while arguing for rational sex offense laws. Iowans Unafraid does not condone any crime including those of sexual nature.

Purpose Statements

Iowans Unafraid Believes:

  1. Sexual abuse is never acceptable.

  2. Both children and adults have the right to live in an environment free of harm.

  3. Victims of abuse have the right to seek justice in a system that is factual and compassionate.

  4. Sex Offense policies and laws should be established through peer reviewed research and empirical data, not based on paranoia, emotional bias, and/or fear.

  5. Current Iowa laws classify “sex offenders” as a one-size-fits-all monitoring system, wasting taxpayer dollars, diluting the supervision of dangerous offenders, and not reducing public safety.

  6. Each offense must be judged on its own merits, issuing a punishment that fits the crime, while not wasting taxpayer dollars.

  7. Money spent on disciplinary measures, including the sex offender registry, would be better spent on education, therapy, and rehabilitation.

  8. Mandatory sentencing laws prevent judges from determining appropriate punishments, including preventative therapy, where once completed, are professionally monitored for an agreed upon amount of time without it being public knowledge.

  9. The (public) sex offender registry and residency restraint regulations do not protect children but instead, ostracize and dehumanize entire families.

  10. Those on the registry should be entitled to employment and housing and daily living needs as those currently functioning in society, regardless of their pasts.

  11. Registrants should be allowed to provide for their family and loved ones without judgement, harassment, hatred, or exclusion from mainstream society.

  12. We must counter unverified myths about sex offenses with facts that are supported by sound research and empirical data.
